The Mayor's Centenary Mission - to restore Cromer's War Memorial for 2018

Cromer's War Memorial was unveiled on the 3rd of July 1921 and commemorates 86 men from our town who gave their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1918 and whose graves are honoured in France, Iraq, Tanzania, Malta, Egypt, Turkey, Karachi, Jerusalem, Overstrand and Cromer.

The memorial was designed by the Architect, William Douglas Caroe and has a large hexagonal step base in which are inscribed Names of the Fallen along with figurative statues in niches showing a soldier, sailor, airman and nurse.

Over the years the Cromer weather, particularly the north-easterly winds, have had their effect on the structure and considerable work is needed to ensure that the memorial is in a condition befitting the importance of the ceremonies currently being planned for the centenary in 2018.

A working group has been formed dedicated to raising the necessary funds and implement the work required for a proper restoration. Anyone who would like to make a donation for the restoration works, sponsor the engraving of names from WW2 or can help with fundraising are invited to contact the Deputy Town Clerk Janet Warner Tel 01263 512254 or email deputy@cromer-tc.gov.uk.
